Jane Austen Sequels- Darcy’s Dreams: A Sequel to the Fitzwilliam Darcy Story, by Regina Jeffers

The incomparable Jane Austen has a long list of titles as well as author imitators who keep up the tradition of her unrelenting style with varying degrees of literary finesse. Tearing into the overly dramatic novels complete with buxom damsels, the satiric wit of Jane Austen never fails the reader. Her style has inspired generations of authors that emulate her, among them is the novelist Regina Jeffers, who has woven many a romantic tale in the tradition of Jane Austen.

In Darcy’s Dreams, Regina Jeffers tells the unforgettable story of Fitzwilliam Darcy and his undying love for Elizabeth Bennet through eight years of war. Their marriage is consummated and they are soon expecting a child that would become heir to Pemberley, eventually inherriting the estate from Darcy, the current master of Pemberley. Darcy soon loses his memory, forgetting his love for Elizabeth, forgetting Pemberley estate and the future or their unborn child.

Besides bringing back Darcy’s love for her, Elizabeth must fend off two spiteful and canniving women would manipulate Darcy’s already failing memory, while attempting to destroy Elizabeth’s social status and the untarnished legacy of the Darcy name. At stake is Elizabeth’s child, the heir to Pemberley, as well as his love of Darcy and the social standing of an ancient, well respected family. As the mistress of Pemberley estate, Elizabeth would have to keep the estate running, protect her unborn child, and save her long-awaited marriage from overnight ruin. Quite formidable tasks indeed.

Regina Jeffers makes it clear from the start of Darcy’s Dreams that Elizabeth Bennet is deeply in love and in awe of her new home. Throughout the story it seems clear that although it is her love and her marriage she is desperately fighting to save, she does so with a desire to keep from losing the position in life she now holds. Everything hangs on her success in restoring her husband’s love for her, and doing so before she finds herself replaced by Elizabeth Donnely or the equally wicked Cecelia McFarland.

Published Pride and Prejuice sequels run the gambit from good to something special. I enjoyed every page of this novel and have since read ofther Regina Jeffers books.

Regina Jeffers is the author of eight novels: most are well done Pride and Prejudice sequels and adaptations. Her most recent novel, is entitled The Phantom of Pemberley: A Pride and Prejudice Murder Mystery, is due out later this year and will undoubtedly build on the previous success of her other 7 published works: Second Chances: the Courtship Wars, Darcy’s Temptation, Darcy’s Passions, Darcy’s Dreams, Wayward Love: Captain Frederick Wentworth’s Story, Honor and Hope, and Vampire Darcy’s Desire.

Jane Austen Sequels- Darcy’s Passions: Pride and Prejudice Retold Through His Eyes, by Regina Jeffers

Darcy’s Passions: Pride and Prejudice Retold Through His Eyes, written by Regina Jeffers shows a unique view into the life of the characters from Jane Austen’s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. The author, an unassuming every day woman brings a voice and perspective to this sequel that is not present in the original work and seeks to explain the workings of the brooding mind of Fitzwillam Darcy, Esq. Mr. Darcy’s passions are clearly evident and portrayed in a way to which most can relate, even if they did not relate to him before.

This work brings to the foreground the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy – a minor character in the original work who was the love interest of Elizabeth Bennet. From his initial decision not to dance with her at the Meryton Assembly through a few months after their wedding, this novel takes an interesting path through the mind of this gentleman landowner. The perspective of the man, although very understandable to readers, is one that may not have been previously considered.

Regina Jeffers is a teacher who currently lives in North Carolina, but was born in West Virginia and also taught in Ohio. She penned Darcy’s Passions after being encouraged by students to explore in more depth the perspective of Mr. Darcy. She is a normal, everyday woman who says that she is much more in line with the character of Mr. Darcy than that of Elizabeth Bennet, to whom more women are able to relate.

The passions of Mr. Darcy are explored in this novel, as the title suggests, and it becomes clear to the reader that his passions involve his family, including his sister Georgiana, and his Lizzy – otherwise known as Elizabeth Bennet. He refers to her with this pet name when he is not in the normal day-to-day activities, but instead allows his passion to be seen.

Although Mr. Darcy initially chose not to dance with her, Elizabeth spurned his advances later when she refused his marriage proposal – but that still did not deter his passions. He was entranced by Elizabeth Bennet – his Lizzy – and the two were wed, displaying how true he kept to his passions. Regina Jeffers combines the unique viewpoint, captivating subject and the passions of Mr. Darcy to create a polished, refined book in Darcy’s Passions.

As published sequels of Jane Austen’s novels go, this one is something special. Regina Jeffers has taken an interesting look into the mind and personality of one of fictions most beloved heroes.

Jane Austen Sequels- Darcy’s Temptation: A Sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, by Regina Jeffers

There has been no one better to weave a timeless love story than Jane Austen, and her characters in Pride and Prejudice have inspired millions of different takes on the opposites attract theory. In fact, there have been several sequels to the original written, including Pemberly by the Sea, and the newest by Regina Jeffers, Darcy’s Temptation.

Darcy’s Temptation is unique in that it is told from his point of view. Regina Jeffers has really captured the spirit of Mr. Darcy and as the book opens, we see that Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are still together. As the book progresses, it details the first year or their marriage, showing how Darcy would of course, choose Elizabeth again were he given the chane to do so. The love displayed in Pride and Prejudice is a love of ages, and Regina Jeffers only compounds this feeling with her excellent writing and detailed plots.

It feels as though she knew exactly where Austen wanted to take her characters and fans of the original will absolutely adore the direction Jeffers has taken their familiar characters. The main draw of Darcy’s Tempation is the fact that Jeffers is able to capture the spirit of each character so well. There have been many sequels written to Pride & Prejudice, but rarely do they capture the same writing style that Austen intended for her audience.

If you enjoyed Pride & Prejudice and you’re looking to continue the story, then Darcy’s Temptation is a great place to start. Out of the countless sequels that are available, it is the most cohesive and will leave you feeling as though you are reading something written by Jane Austen herself.

Other Pride & Prejudice sequels really can’t hold a candle to what Regina Jeffers is doing, and with more works on the way, it seems as though this will be an ongoing series of sequels.

Jane Austen Sequels- Honor and Hope, by Regina Jeffers

The genre created by turn of the century English novelist Jane Austen in her short time on this earth has not only survived her but has developed an extensive fan base over the last 200 years. Many modern authors now create Jane Austen based fan fiction which spans everything form upublished works to thousands of stories posted online, to the several hundred published books published in the ever growing list of novels paying homage to her six major classics.

Honor and Hope was written by Jane Austen fan fiction adaptation novelist Regina Jeffers, who now has seven similar novels to her credit. The story of Honor and Hope features the ever present Darcy surname, with Will Darcy, a hot shot championship winning quarterback in love with Liz Bennet, whom he finds himself uncontrollably drawn too, and consuming his every thought.

Their passion for each other supplants other priorities in their lives at times throughout their college career. As their relationship matures, Liz finds herself fighting to maintain her independence even as Will attempts to assert his need to play the protector.

This modern Jane Austen fanfiction adaptation takes the reader through the heartbreak of these two devoted lovers as they go their own ways in life, only to have fate draw them together six years later on a beach in South Carolina. The true flame of their passion never having burned out, they begin to rekindle what they had.

However, much can happen in six years, and both Liz and Will harbor secrets that could threaten their future lives together once again. Even as Will seeks to control Liz through manipulation of their finances, while facing public accusations of steroid use, Liz hides the knowledge of the child they created deep within her.

The intriguing characters will engage the reader to the end, as it becomes clear that it will take much larger transgressions to keep them apart. A tale that seems to echo the lives of two real life characters, this story plays out the often real contradiction between passion and day-to-day living. True to the Jane Austen style, the character of Liz Bennet walks the line between holding on to her ideal mate and maintaining her strength as a woman.

With several hundred Jane Austen sequels available today, most focus strongly on the Regency era. Jeffers has taken a different track and given us the chance to see Darcy and his Elizabeth in a much more modern setting. That is the great thing about the themes addressed in Austen’s original works, they are truly timeless and update well for modern audiences, as Jeffers has proven with Honor and Hope.

Jane Austen Sequels- Second Chances: The Courtship Wars, by Regina Jeffers

Regina Jeffers is known for her sequels of Jane Austen novels, with seven very popular novels to her credit. For example, with Darcy’s Passions, the Pride and Prejudice story is retold from the point of view of Darcy, and the story goes past the end of the original novel to describe the first few months of his marriage to Elizabeth Bennet. Honor and Hope is a modern Pride and Prejudice adaptation in which Darcy is a star quarterback. She makes no attempt to match the elegance of Austen’s style, but the romantic tension and suspense remains. These are the kind of books that many people who are fans of romance novels will enjoy a lot, while lovers of great literature may cringe. Still, if you enjoy imagining what happend next for some of literature’s most endearing characters, you will likely enjoy this, and many other, of the Jane Austen sequels available today.

Second Chances: The Courtship Wars, is a departure in that the plot in that it is only very loosely based on Pride and Prejudice, in fact, you will be pressed to find a Darcy or Elizabeth in this book. In this novel, the plot revolves around a male and a female psychologist who are professional rivals and end up being on the staff of a reality T.V. show with the title “Second Chances.” The show is a competition for people who want to remarry former spouses compete for a fancy dream wedding. Although the psychologists, named Carter and Gillian, are not supposed to be featured in front of the cameras, the producers notice chemistry between them, and, well, you’ll have to read the original novel.

I personally fit into both the romance-loving and literature-loving camps. I especially like 18th and 19th century English literature and have read most of Jane Austen’s books as well as most of Thomas Hardy’s romantic tragedies. Modern romance novels are more of a guilty pleasure. Second Chances: The Courtship was a good read and I hope she writes more original stories. While this story is a departure from her usual novels, and only very minimally modeled on Pride and Prejudice, it is still totally to my taste and was a more than enjoyable read. If you like your Pride and Prejudice characters closer to the originals, stick to one of Jeffers other adaptations.
