Jane Austen Sequels- Days and Nights at Pemberley, by Linda Berdoll

In the continuing story of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy, Linda Berdoll continues her characters lives as the master and mistress of Pemberley estate as they enjoy married life together and their relationship matures. She explores the passion of the sexual life the two have as man and wife in Darcy and Elizabeth: Days and Nights at Pemberley. This is the sequel to her first novel, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. In her second novel, Berdoll centers on the Darcy’s as well as their younger sister, Georgiana Darcy as she grows to be a young woman in her own right. She develops the character’s personality a bit differently and makes her a stronger woman than she originally was in Jane Austen’s classic novel.

The Darcy’s move on in their life, and as time passes have children of their own. The story follows the couple as they spend their days managing life at Pemberley estate, dealing with the war on the continent and through the trials and tribulations of many a misadventure and misstep. There are also appearances by familiar characters such as Colonel Fitzwilliam, the Bingley’s and several other well loved characters. It is definitely a passionate book that focuses on the romance between the two beloved main characters, and seeks to explain their often times complex relationship.

Darcy and Elizabeth: Days and Nights at Pemberley has met with mixed reviews. Some fans who read the first installment did not enjoy the sequel as much as the first book, while others found the second just as good as the first. Some felt that the writing was repetitive at times and didn’t offer as much in the way of a plot, while others found the novel creative and well done. I, however, am amongst the second group. I enjoyed both Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife and Darcy and Elizabeth equally.

If you enjoy reading passionate love stories, you will probably enjoy this book. It is a romance novel that can be enjoyed by people whether they are familiar with the original characters or not. It is also one of the longer sequels currently available, with 429 pages, but it can be a refreshing change of pace. For those fans of Pride and Prejudice that wondered about the direction our couple might have taken after Pride and Prejudice ended, this book will allow them to get a glimpse into what may have become of our most beloved couple. All-in-all, Mrs. Berdoll has done a good job with character development and concocting a complicated storyline. In my opinion her second novel will be an enjoyable read for most.

Linda Berdoll is the Author of three published novels: Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, Darcy and Elizabeth: Days and Nights at Pemberley and Very Nice Ways to Say Very Bad Things: An Unusual Book of Euphimisms (a non-Regency, non-Jane Austen sequel.) She is currently working on her third Pride and Prejudice continuation, The Ruling Passion, which currently has no scheduled release date.

Jane Austen Sequels- Mansfield Park Revisited: A Jane Austen Entertainment, by Joan Aiken

Joan Aiken’s Mansfield Park Revisited is a Regency era sequel which tells the story of Susan, sister of Fanny Price, after Fanny and her husband Edward Bertram depart for their honeymoon. By choosing one of Jane Austen’s less popular or well-known novels as the basis for her novel, Aiken challenges herself to envision a sequel that will capture fans of more popular Austen books such as Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility.

Susan Price is the focus of Mansfiels Park Revisited, and the story follows her as she takes her sister’s place as the companion to Lady Bertram. With all the drawbacks, dramatics and surprises such a position entails, Susan finds her life is drastically changed nearly overnight. Susan’s spunky character makes her the perfect focus for a sequel to Mansfield Park with her much sweeter and quieter main character, Fanny.

The novel delves into the stories of many of the supporting characters of the original novel, fleshes them out and sometimes surprises us with new insights into their characters.

Austen purists may be surprised at the transformation of the depiction of the Crawfords, whom Aiken turns from antagonists into sympathetic characters by taking a somewhat deeper look at their circumstances and upbringings. Aiken’s novel is not dependent on its predecessor and any reader will enjoy this story without having read any previous writings by Austen.

Unlike some authors, Ms. Aiken makes no attempt to mimic the writing style of Austen or other Regency writers. Instead she uses her own engaging voice to reinvent several characters from the original novel as well as introducing some of her own. Mindful of her audience, Aiken crafts a plot with plenty or romantic entanglements and intrigues with wit and charm.

If you have enjoyed any of Aiken’s other Jane Austen sequels in the past, you are sure to enjoy this one as well. Her unique voice and style are always a pleasure to read.

Joan Aiken is the author of five Jane Austen sequels, continuations and adaptations. Her Jane Austen related works include: The Watsons and Emma Watson: Jane Austen’s Unfinished Novel Completed by Joan Aiken, Jane Fairfax: The Secret Story of the Second Heroine in Jane Austen’s Emma, Eliza’s Daughter: A Sequel to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park Revisited: A Jane Austen Entertainment, Lady Catherine’s Necklace: A Jane Austen Entertainment, in addition to her numerous other published novels. Jane Austen Sequels- Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, by Linda Berdoll

Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife , by Linda Berdoll is not like most other Pride and Prejudice sequels. It is rather like one of the more modern romance novels of today in terms of overt and passionate sex scenes of our most beloved couple. It does not have the delicate innuendos of a couple being intimate together, but rather dives right into the sexual adventures of the newlywed Darcy’s. The book has received mixed reviews from fans of Jane Austen’s original work. While the storyline picks up right where Austen left off and continues as Darcy and Elizabeth begin their married lives together, the subject matter is anything but Austen. The novel is steamy to say the least. While, the language and style of writing do mimic that of Austen’s original, Austen purists have taken it to task for the overt sexuality.

Even though the settings are familiar places such as Longbourn, Lambton and Pemberley, the Austeneque style writing creates a deicded controversy with some fans. Some people prefer the master and mistress of Pemberely to keep their sexual exploits to themselves and would rather enjoy the subtleties of romance and courtship and the art of the euphimism instead. This book is not entirely devoted to the sexual escapades of the Darcy’s; it does have its own villains and turmoil thrown into the mix, along with a rather well developed plot and storyline. Jane and Bingley are in the picture as are Mr. Collins and Charlotte and most of the original cast of characters from the original Pride and Prejudice.

Linda Berdoll also takes a look at the personality of Fitzwilliam himself to help readers understand the aloofness of his character. While this is not the first book to delve inside the mysteries of Fitzwilliam’s past to unlock the events behind the complexity of his character, it is a different point of view. Also included are some of the politics of the time and the possible impending war. If you enjoy reading contemporary love stories, you will probably enjoy the direction this particular book takes in telling its tale. It is definitely a different approach to the tale of these two beloved characters of Ms. Austen’s. Austen purists may find some fault in Linda Berdoll’s attempts. That said, if you like your Darcy and Elizabeth passionate, steamy and with great depth to their characters, this is the sequel for you.

Linda Berdoll is the Author of three published novels: Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, Darcy and Elizabeth: Days and Nights at Pemberley and Very Nice Ways to Say Very Bad Things: An Unusual Book of Euphimisms (a non-Regency, non-Jane Austen sequel.) Jane Austen Sequels- Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma, by Diana Birchall

Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma is one of the Regency era Pride and Prejudice sequels written by Diana Birchall. The novel is set during a time of change in Britain in 1837 when Queen Victoria is just coming to the throne. Mr. and Mrs. Darcy are now a middle-aged couple and still managing Pemberly estate. They have their innate charm, wittiness, and good fortune from the previous Pride and Prejudice novel. The story turns when they invite two daughters from Mrs. Darcy’s profligate sister Lydia to come visit them one they are at home. The Darcy’s sons fall in love with the daughters and they’re oldest son Fitzwilliam Darcy runs off to London with Bettina, one of the daughters.

At the same time the younger son Henry is falling in love with the other daughter Chloe and he eventually proposes to her but she is so horrified with her other sister’s actions that she instead attempts to seek a position as a governess rather than shame the rest of the family.

Many of the other famous characters from the Pride and Prejudice are also present such as Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Mr. and Mrs. Darcy are still deeply in love with each other throughout this book, and much of the concerns of Mrs. Darcy originate from worrying about the paths their children will choose. Neither of the Darcy’s would have expected such a turn of events to unfold when they invited Lydia’s daughters over for a protracted visit to their estate. They initially decided to take the girls in after receiving a letter from Lydia Wickham in which she describes the hardships she had been going through. Everybody is also shocked when after running off together, Fitzwilliam and Bettina decide not to marry.

Birchall has crafted a witty, funny sequel in which the lessons of the past seem to resurface to challenge both the new generation and their parents who should have learned much from their own experiences.

Diana Birchall is the author of a second hilariously funny Jane Austen sequel, The Complete Mrs. Elton, which is a Regency sequel to Emma.

Jane Austen Sequels- The Second Mrs. Darcy, by Elizabeth Aston

Elizabeth Aston is the author of The Darcy Novels which include: The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy, Mr. Darcy’s Daughters, The Darcy Connection, Mr. Darcy’s Dream, and The True Darcy Spirit. Another of her novels, The Way of the World, features the Darcy family, but is not part of the Darcy Novels series. Her latest book is a modern Jane Austen based story, Writing Jane Austen, which is about a modern writer who takes an assignment to complete an unfinished classic novel. All are excessively diverting!
