Jane Austen Sequels- Darcy’s Passions: Pride and Prejudice Retold Through His Eyes, by Regina Jeffers
Darcy’s Passions: Pride and Prejudice Retold Through His Eyes, written by Regina Jeffers shows a unique view into the life of the characters from Jane Austen’s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. The author, an unassuming every day woman brings a voice and perspective to this sequel that is not present in the original work and seeks to explain the workings of the brooding mind of Fitzwillam Darcy, Esq. Mr. Darcy’s passions are clearly evident and portrayed in a way to which most can relate, even if they did not relate to him before.
This work brings to the foreground the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy – a minor character in the original work who was the love interest of Elizabeth Bennet. From his initial decision not to dance with her at the Meryton Assembly through a few months after their wedding, this novel takes an interesting path through the mind of this gentleman landowner. The perspective of the man, although very understandable to readers, is one that may not have been previously considered.
Regina Jeffers is a teacher who currently lives in North Carolina, but was born in West Virginia and also taught in Ohio. She penned Darcy’s Passions after being encouraged by students to explore in more depth the perspective of Mr. Darcy. She is a normal, everyday woman who says that she is much more in line with the character of Mr. Darcy than that of Elizabeth Bennet, to whom more women are able to relate.
The passions of Mr. Darcy are explored in this novel, as the title suggests, and it becomes clear to the reader that his passions involve his family, including his sister Georgiana, and his Lizzy – otherwise known as Elizabeth Bennet. He refers to her with this pet name when he is not in the normal day-to-day activities, but instead allows his passion to be seen.
Although Mr. Darcy initially chose not to dance with her, Elizabeth spurned his advances later when she refused his marriage proposal – but that still did not deter his passions. He was entranced by Elizabeth Bennet – his Lizzy – and the two were wed, displaying how true he kept to his passions. Regina Jeffers combines the unique viewpoint, captivating subject and the passions of Mr. Darcy to create a polished, refined book in Darcy’s Passions.
As published sequels of Jane Austen’s novels go, this one is something special. Regina Jeffers has taken an interesting look into the mind and personality of one of fictions most beloved heroes.
Regina Jeffers is the author of eight novels: most are well done Pride and Prejudice sequels and adaptations.
