Jane Austen Sequels- The Darcy Connection: A Novel, by Elizabeth Aston
Jane Austen was a popular English writer, who is best known for her classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Her novels have inspired many other writers, who taking a cue from her and have crafted quite interesting Jane Austen sequel novels in their own rights. The Darcy Connection by Elizabeth Aston is one such novel which has been inspired by Pride & Prejudice and Aston’s great love of Austen’s original works.
The Darcy Connection centers on the life of Mr. Collins & Mrs. Collins of Pride & Prejudice and shows what their lives could have been after the original novel ended. The story revolves around their two daughters- Charlotte & Eliza. These two have striking resemblance to the Bennet sister’s – Jane & Elizabeth, the key characters of Pride & Prejudice. Charlotte the elder daughter of Mr. Collins is beautiful and Eliza the younger sister is not as much of a beauty, but is very intelligent and witty. Also, the story in this novel is woven round the same plot of romance, match making , betrayal and a light humor which parallels the original storyline.
The Darcy Connection is a novel for those who are left wondering how the more minor characters lives might have ended up and how their lives are intertwined with the Darcy family. The novel succeeds to an extent in giving us a chance to find out, as it takes us down the memory lane by again bringing to us the Master and Mistress of Pemberley’s estate in Derbyshire. Mr. and Mrs. Darcy have since matured in their married lives and have a family of their own.
Mrs. Darcy, nee Elizabeth Bennet is now the godmother of Eliza Collins and still great friends with her mother, the former Charlotte Lucas. The story has some interesting sub-plots and is a delightful read. Just as delightful, in fact, as Aston’s other JA sequels.
Elizabeth Aston is the author of The Darcy Novels which include: The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy, Mr. Darcy’s Daughters, The Darcy Connection, Mr. Darcy’s Dream, and The True Darcy Spirit. Another of her novels, The Way of the World, features the Darcy family, but is not part of the Darcy Novels series. Her latest book is a modern Jane Austen based story, Writing Jane Austen, which is about a modern writer who takes an assignment to complete an unfinished classic novel. All are excessively diverting!
