Jane Austen Sequels: The Novels of Carrie Bebris
Carrie Bebris is an award winning novelist, perhaps most widely known for her series of mystery books featuring characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy originally from created by Jane Austen. These include the intriguingly titled the Suspense and Sensibility, The Intrigue of Highbury (subtitled Emma’s Match), North by Northhanger (The Shades of Pemberly), which was presented with the (Daphne du Maurier) prize for excellence in romantic suspence writing in 2007, as well as the Romantic Times Book’s Reviewer’s Choice Prize as Best Historial Mystery Novel presented by the Romantic Times Book Club in 2006; and the Matters at Mansfield (aka The Crawford Affair).
Her first in the series was Pride and Prescience in 2004, which was considered to be one of the best mystery books written in 2004 and one of the best sellers according to the Association of Independent Booksellers. As with the original Jane Austen books, Bebris stories all take place during the Regency Period in England and contain an rather gothic aura as well as intrigue mixed with romance. She also has a strong talent for crisp dialogue and imagery that appeals to Austen enthusiasts, always hungry for more about her characters.
In fact, Carrie Bebris holds a lifetime membership in the Jane Austern Society’s North American chapter, and holds an MA degree based on 19th century English literature. Both credintials were excellent starting points for her well researched novels.
Born in Wisconsin, Carrie Bebris began her writing career working in various capacities as a newspaper reporter, as well as an English teacher at the college level. She also worked as an editor for TSR, Inc publishing where she created several game supplements for Dungeons & Dragons®.
She later expanded her career as a freelance editor and writer, publishing her first book, Shadowborn in 1998. Other novels by Carrie Bebris soon followed, including Ruins of Myth Drannor and Pool of Radiance both published in 2001. In addition, she also edited Kim Wilson’s book, Tea with Jane Austen, as well as Anne-Marie Edwards’s book Walking With William Shakespeare, and often lectures about publishing and writing as a member of the Antioch Writers’ Workshop in her home state of Ohio.
Yet, not all her writing is confined these days to eightenth century England fiction. In fact, Bebris keeps herself busy with many non-fiction articles for Special Interst Publications as well as re-modeling advice published in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.
Her personal interests include traveling with her husband, as well as watching “costume dramas,” which she jokingly states “sends her husband running from the house.”
