Jane Austen Sequels: The Novels of Lory Lillian

Lory Lillan novles are one set of works in the growing field of Jane Austen fanfiction (JAFF) and sequels. Lillian is a Romanian author who has enjoyed unmitigated success in the JAFF arena. As interest in this area of Regency novels grows, JAFF has a core following amongst readers who cannot help but ask “what came next?”

In her January 2010 interview with blogger and JAFF author Mary Simonsen, Lory Lillan revealed the road to self-publication that brought her two JAFF novels to life. The Lory Lillian novles Rainy Days and Remembrance of the Past both started as fan fiction available at the Derbyshire’s Writers Guild website and other story boards. These sequels of Pride and Predjudice offer readers what the original author did not get the opportunity to do: continue her story and expand the world around it.

Jane Austen continuations fall into the Regency genre of writing and have become hugely popular over the last decade. Rainy Days has existed in two forms: a PG rated version, and now the currently in print NC-17 version of the book. Lory was hesitant to publish her novels at first, unsure if people would love them enough to buy hardcopies of her works. The thought that people might pay for a hardcopies to place on their book shelf next to other well known and loved Jane Austen as sequels to Pride and Prejudice was as foreign to Lory as the English language in which she had written her novels. Like her mastery of English, her books would gain momentum from the support of the JAFF environment.

A quick tour of the Amazon customer reviews offers a universal appreciation for this author’s continuation of Ms. Austen’s novels. Her Darcy is a lovable one, but remains complicated and she offers no easy answers to the star crossed couple. Her clear grasp of the original characters and incorporation of new ones as needed bring a depth and flavor to these books by Lory Lillian that approaches the full palette of imagery Jane Austen herself engaged to capture the reader. Whether it is the original characters trapped with one another by foul weather, forced to confront their feelings and their future, or the chance meeting in Pemberly between the two found in Remembrance of the Past, Ms. Lillian captures the essence of the interplay between the characters without confusing where they will inevitably arrive – still captured between desire and duty.
