Jane Austen Sequels- The True Darcy Spirit: A Novel, by Elizabeth Aston
In this sequel to the original Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy and his wife Elizabeth have a family. The story revolves around the daughters of Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth as they take their place in society. The girls come equipped with their own unique personalities and will enchant the reader with their wit and determination. The plot advances with the arrival of Cassandra who is cousin to the young Darcy girls. She comes with her own determined character and personality that is true to the Darcy line.
The master of Pemberley estate and his wife are not the prominent players in this particular tale of the Darcy family, but rather, it is the next generation the story centers on. The main character seems to be the impetuous cousin who makes some bad choices and struggles to find her own way in London as the season progresses. It is refreshing to see young women portrayed as intelligent and determined souls, but for this particular period in time it is not a trait thought highly of by most of London’s elite society. This novel was written by Elizabeth Aston and has a fairly accurate portrayal of life in those times.
For fans of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy this book will be an interesting alternative to read as you will have the opportunity to get to know them through the eyes of their grown children. It does not follow the romantic interests of the original characters as much as it creates a new line of adventure for some new characters. If you enjoy reading about the strengths of the young women of those times, you will enjoy the style of this story. The book takes a new approach to the writing of the Pride and Prejudice sequels by creating new characters, and still maintains the spirit of the Regency period.
Elizabeth Aston is the author of The Darcy Novels which include: The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy, Mr. Darcy’s Daughters, The Darcy Connection, Mr. Darcy’s Dream, and The True Darcy Spirit. Another of her novels, The Way of the World, features the Darcy family, but is not part of the Darcy Novels series. Her latest book is a modern Jane Austen based story, Writing Jane Austen, which is about a modern writer who takes an assignment to complete an unfinished classic novel. All are excessively diverting!
